The Cheapest Flat in Shanghai

by Richard Wong

There’s this crack in the ceiling that le
aks whenever it rains. I talked to the lan
dlord but all he said was “get a cat” and hu
ng up on me. When it drips, Russell me
ows extra hard—he’s a very observant room
mate. He also hisses at the bucket on the flo
or—he gets jealous easily. As a massive sto
rm squirts into our living room, I give Ru
ss a long stroke and concur: “I guess this ai
n’t so bad.”
