Boy Capel

by Karen Poppy

On the date of his death, December 22

Herringbone, perfectly placed seam,
Tight-shouldered and single-breasted.
Loose-fitting pants, but elegant crease.
Dark shoes polished to a shining gleam.
English-born and oui, French-invested.
Calf-bound books, in leisure and peace.
Morning in bed, dark eyes meet green.
Then afternoon, jodhpurs and sweater.
Froth up that horse. Ride hell for leather.
